Adam and Eve in their pre-sin state were clothed with a garment of soft, white light. 

“This robe of light was a symbol of their spiritual garments of heavenly innocence. Had they remained true to God it would ever have continued to enshroud them. But when sin entered, they severed their connection with God, and the light that had encircled them departed. Naked and ashamed, they tried to supply the place of the heavenly garments by sewing together fig leaves for a covering” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 311).

These fig-leaf aprons were symbolic of their self-righteousness. “The fig-leaves represent the arguments used to cover disobedience” (Review and Herald, Nov 15, 1898).

God knew that these immodest garments were inadequate for clothing so He fashioned for the guilty pair coats of skin (Gen 3:21). Because a lamb had to die in the process, these coats symbolized the righteousness of Christ that could be theirs through faith in the Saviour.
